Team Gulp – Key West April 2009 – Day 8

Our two new teammates were Robin and Geoff. Robin is Sales Director of Daiwa Sports and now we have more tackle than the tackle shops in Key West.

Robin and Keith were with Captain Jack on Windy Day with Radomir. We all wish he would change the boats name, as again it was extremely windy gusting to over 30 miles per hour. They went Tarpon Fishing and although they tried very hard they failed to land one. Tarpon do not like a big wind and that is a fact.

I had Geoff with me and our Captain was Jay, he is a giant of a man. We had a cunning plan; we would fish for Tarpon till around 10.30 until the tide turned. Then we would go to Jew Fish Basin to fish for sharks. Geoff said he would like to catch a big shark as he had never caught one.

We started off Tarpon Fishing and I quickly had two Lemon Sharks and a King Fish along with several snappers.

To get Geoff into training I let him fight the sharks and the Kingfish. Just as the tide slacked I hooked a substantial fish that eventually cut us off on the channel ledge, I never saw it but it made all of the right moves for a very big Tarpon. Then it was off to Jew Fish Basin and we had a ball.

Within minutes we were seeing big shadows cruising around our shark baits in about 6’ of water. Geoff fell for my bad elbow story . He kept taking the rod with nasty Lemon Sharks pulling at the other end. I kept this up for over 4 hours and all of that time Geoff was fighting big Lemons up to 160lbs.

(Roy's favourite trick with any unsuspecting newcomers is to hook the fish and then anything that he doesn't fancy playing he passes the rod over to the newcomer, claiming that he has a bad elbow. He tried that one on me the first time that I joined them. We were over the submarine and he hooked a big Amberjack. Unfortunately for him, I'm cack handed and the reel handle was on the wrong side for me, you should have seen his face)

One fish went under the anchor 7 times, but eventually we got it. Some of the fish ran over two hundred yards but we got them all back and released them.

The final tally was 15 Lemon Sharks, 1 nurse Shark and 1 King Fish, plus several smaller species.Geoff is exhausted and has gone to bed early. Considering his biggest fish prior to today was 35lbs he did well. So well in fact that we have decided to call him Lemon Geoff.

I am exhausted; I fell asleep on my PC writing this. Tomorrow is another day, the forecast is still windy, and we will need another cunning plan to stand any chance of success.
