Surf Spinning Rod
Surf Spinning Rod

new surf combo .?
i want to get a new surf combo. i would like it to hold around 4-600yds of 20lb mono line. i will be using this rod for sharks, and possibly tarpon. what would be a good rod/reel
it can be spinning or conventional
Heck KOF, you know this stuff, (fishing), as good as anybody on YAnswer's! (lol)
But I'll give my opinions anyway- it's fun! (lol)
Hands down the best priced VS quality for large Shark/Tarpon spinning reel is the Fin-Nor Offshore Spinning Reel. Not only is it built like a TANK, it has the drag capabilities to haul in a large fish - http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89192_151001000_151000000_151001000_151-1-0

Yes, the reel handle has a bit of "back-play" but "stressing" out over that is "nit-picking". This reel is a "bruiser" that is as durable and well constructed as ANY of the Shimano Stella line AT HALF the price. In my opinion, if you decide to go the Spinning route this is the reel for you.........
For Conventional?- Although I know level-wind reels detract from the distance of your casts, I love this reel for any "distance casting from shore" for big critters. So, I may be 25 yards "short"...... this reel IS easier to cast and catches BIG fish WELL- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89108_151001001_151000000_151001000_151-1-1
You know all this stuff already KOF!
Oh well, it was fun anyway.
UPDATE: Oops! I forgot rods. Well, I hate to say it, but Ugly Stik makes a mighty fine Surf Rod, (esp for BIG fish). You could get a VERY nice Ugly Stik for 1/2 the price of any other rod. Here's some links-
1. The 11 or 12 FTer Heavy action would be right for larger Shark/Tarpon/Reds- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_19912____SearchResults?ordProd=Y&CMID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail
2. Although I don't own one of these, they have amazing feedback and appear decent- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_38525_151002008_151000000_151002000_151-2-8
3. St. Croix has an amazing return policy. Might be worth the extra money to have the ability to return a broken rod no questions asked- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44409_151002008_151000000_151002000_151-2-8
